September Peak Month for Atlantic Hurricanes

The Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30. is the period in a year when hurricanes usually form in the Atlantic Ocean. Tropical waves are forecast to emerge off the coast of western Africa, potentially spinning up into tropical cyclones as they track westward across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, known as the Main Development Region (MDR) for Atlantic hurricanes.

The National Hurricane Center said on Tuesday that tropical waves are forecast to emerge off the coast of western Africa, potentially spinning up into tropical cyclones as they track westward across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, known as the Main Development Region (MDR) for Atlantic hurricanes. such tropical wave moving off the African coast by Thursday bears watching for some development in the eastern Atlantic over the weekend.

Though NOAA forecasts below-normal Atlantic hurricane season thanks to El Niño, it is still imperative that all people in the area effected by hurricanes stay prepared.

Preparedness for hurricanes is similar to earthquake preparedness. Make a plan, review and practice it with your family. Have survival kits and supplies stored anywhere you spend time. Having a kit at work, school, as well as having one stashed in your car is advised.

SEPTEMBER: NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2006
For the third straight year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will sponsor National Preparedness Month, along with a coalition of more than 200 national, regional, state and local organizations. National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools. This year's goals are to increase public awareness about the importance of family emergency preparedness and to urge individuals to make themselves and their loved ones better prepared.

"Every American has a personal responsibility to ensure that their family is prepared for the unexpected," said Under Secretary for Preparedness George Foresman. "Through this effort, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Preparedness Month Coalition will encourage all Americans to be ready before emergencies happen."

Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Representatives Peter King (R-NY) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS) have agreed to serve as Honorary Congressional Co-Chairs of National Preparedness Month 2006 and lead the effort on Capitol Hill.

National Preparedness Month provides Americans with information about preparing themselves, their families and their communities for emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist threats. Activities across the nation encourage individuals to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan and be informed about the different threats that may affect them.

Survivalkitsonline.com is ready to help you prepare. Terrorist can emerge anywhere at anytime. We carry a large number of survival kits and emergency supplies for you to choose from. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA QUAKE FEARS

Posted by on 6/25/2006 to Info

There are things that you can do before a major or minor earthquake strikes. Survivors are the results of Preparedness. Earthquake Kits, 72-Hour Kits, Survival Kits, Emergency Supplies, First Aid KitsStored Water and Emergency Food are the key necessities to survive. FEMA, The Red Cross, The Office of Homeland Security, National, State and local government offices all recommend enough supplies for at least the first 72 hours after a disaster. Please see https://survivalkitsonline.com Earthquake Preparedness in our Disaster Info section and remember to GET READY TO BE PREPARED!

The following is a reprint of a story from the BBC June 22, 2006

The San Andreas Fault runs for roughly 1,280km (800 miles) through California in the US.  It marks the meeting point of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. The southern segment begins near the Salton Sea and runs northward before bending to the west where it meets the San Bernardino Mountains. Los Angeles is the biggest city located near this part of the fault.

Professor Fialko looked at eight years of radar data from European Space Agency satellites that measure in detail how the ground moves and 20 years of global-positioning system (GPS) data.  His analysis suggests the two plates either side of the San Andreas Fault are moving past each other at a rate of about 25mm (an inch) each year - the fault's "slip rate".  The bigger the average slip rate along a fault line, the more stress might be expected to accumulate on parts of the fault that remain locked together. In the absence of a sudden rupture to ease the strain, the fault has built up 5.5-7m (18-23ft) of "slip deficit".

This end of the fault has not experienced a major rupture for at least 250 years and is now primed for a release of the built-up tension. The study by geophysicist Yuri Fialko provides the most precise measurements yet of this accumulated stress.

But scientists cannot predict when another quake is likely to strike. €œThe southern section of the fault is fully loaded for the next big event,€ says Yuri Fialko, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

TAKING THE STRAIN

If all the strain was released at once, it would have enough energy to unleash a magnitude eight earthquake - roughly the size of the devastating 1906 quake in San Francisco.  "The southern section of the fault is fully loaded for the next big event," Professor Fialko, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, explained.

Quakes are predicted to occur on the southern part of the fault every 200-300 years. And according to Professor Fialko, the observed movement on the fault is on a par with the maximum amount of shift the fault has ever experienced between quakes.  Scott Brandenberg, a professor at the University of California, commented: "This is new evidence that tells us the same story that we have known for a while. "It's a reminder that we need to be ready for it when it happens."

The most recent major earthquakes in the northern and central zones of the San Andreas Fault were in 1857 and 1906 respectively. —
