BACKGROUND AND TYPES OF DISASTERS
Both natural and manmade disasters affect many people throughout the world. These events change lives in so many ways. In the best-case scenario, people are able to survive the event with little or minor inconveniences.Other scenarios may be in the form of disruption of necessities that are basic such as water, power, gas, sewers and living space. The worst-case scenario as we all have seen is major loss of life, many injured and sick people.
Living on a planet that is constantly changing due to natural forces such as hurricanes, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires, landslides, and winter storms can be very challenging. We humans have built our homes in every place on this earth where some kind of event can occur. There is the potential of pandemics such as Bird Flu-Avian Influenza-N5N1, SARS and other unknown viruses. There are also manmade disasters such as terrorist attacks, chemical spills, and arson.
The best way to deal with these situations is to be prepared as best as possible. Living in fear just does not work for most of us, but knowing that when such an event does take place, we are as prepared as possible.
This means stocking the necessities to survive, planning, and having everyone in our family knowledgeable and ready. We know that complacency does not work. We know that it may take time for the first responders and the people that support them to get to us.
